The hunt for the perfect dresser!

Standard

For those of you that follow me on Pinterest, you may have noticed that I am a bit obsessed with dressers. I think a dresser can add SO MUCH to a space, both in terms of storage (duh), but also in terms of personality, design and visual interest.

Check out some of these awesome, interesting dressers! I just keep thinking about how these pieces could completely change and influence any room they were placed in.  (click for origin links)

Master bedroom Renovation – Design inspirations

Standard

With our new hardwood in place (yay!), we’ve begun to move furniture back into the master – but this time I’m being picky about what goes in, and … you guessed it… another renovation/ redesign project. (My husband is groaning and shaking his head somewhere).

Our master bedroom is a bit cavernous, and even with a king size bed (with a large upholstered frame) – I have always felt as though there was so much space to fill! I tried to put a large overstuffed leather armchair in the corner – but that ended disastrously (turned into a clothes and purses receptacle).

I brought in a gold occasional table and put a 42″ flat screen TV on it – but that was pointless too, since we don’t watch TV in bed (although I wish we did! SATC’s Carrie is probably right that that’s only fun at hotels…. ) . The occasional table also turned into a dumping spot for random things that had no home, like extra candle holders. Fail.

So anyway – I knew when designing the new master bedroom, I wanted to select purposeful pieces of furniture and decor, which really brought to life the design inspirations I had in mind: (click for pinterest links)

Closet inspirations

(More pictures of this beautiful closet here)

I’ve been obsessing about creating a dream closet for a while now, and I just wanted to show you some of my inspirations.  One of my favorite inspiration pics (above) comes from a new blog I discovered. Megan from Honey We’re Home has a breath-taking closet, and as soon as I found her blog, I was hooked – every room in her house is gorgeous, and she has impeccable taste. In fact, she was a big inspiration for me to start my own home blog – if you ever end up reading this, Thanks, Megan! 🙂 Read the rest of this entry

How to remove your own carpets!

Standard

We ripped out our own carpet, and disposed of it ourselves. Despite being novices, it was pretty easy – but it was a dusty, dirty process and a little time consuming.

You’ll need:

  • Several rolls of duct tape
  • A utility knife and replacement blades
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Something to pry up the tack strips – a crowbar, or, we used a metal spackler tool
  • dust masks
  • protective eyewear <— YES, you’ll look silly, but DO IT. Read the rest of this entry

Putting in hardwood? Useful things to know!!

Standard

We are nearly done having our hardwood installed, and I thought this would be an opportune time to chronicle some of the things we’ve learned so far:

1. Get a BUNCH of quotes! The estimates we got were all wildly different. Ask for a breakdown of the estimate, and take a closer look at:

  • the price per square foot of your wood (Are you going to match existing flooring elsewhere in the home? Do you want an exact match or wood stained to match (less exact)?)
  • the installation cost per square foot
  • are they going to be hauling away their garbage? How much is that going to cost? (One contractor was charging us for bringing a dumpster to the house, filling it and taking it away. That’s nice and all, but…. $$$$)
  • are they going to uninstall the existing flooring? And dispose of it?

The Renovation Upstairs – Part One

Standard

While I would love to start at the beginning and share all my projects chronologically, I thought “Where better to start than the present?” And oh, what a messy, chaotic present it is! We are smack dab in the middle of having hardwood floors put in on our second level! For those of you who know us, y’all might be asking “Uhhhhhh…l didn’t you just move into that brand new house eight months ago? What could be wrong with eight month old carpet, ya bunch off crazies?!”

Well – not much, but at the same time – all the most important things! Read the rest of this entry
